"Pleasure of Practicing"

 

 

Confucius' Analects begins with the passage :  “學而時習之 不亦悅乎(To learn and to practice a lesson in time, is not it also a pleasure?)"  Here, "practice(習)" does not seem to mean 'repeated drilling', as the word usually does. The character for the word is a combination of 'feather(羽)' and 'white(白)'. It describes a tiny fledgling with a still pale beak trying its first flight with the help of its mother. It symbolizes the act of ‘putting into practice’.

 

Also, the word ‘time(時)’, as an adverb, often means ‘at times’, but here, it should rather be interpreted as ‘in time’. As ‘when conditions are ripe’, or as ‘at the right moment’.

 

I saw many people understand this passage as meaning, "To learn and to practice a lesson again and again, is not it also a pleasure?" But I would like to read it as "To learn and to put a lesson into practice just when it is needed, is not it also a pleasure?"

 

“실천하는 게 어찌 즐겁지 않을 수 있겠는가?”

『논어』첫 구절이 “학이시습지”(學而時習之)입니다. 여기서 “습”(習)을 “복습”(復習)의 뜻으로 이해하면 안 됩니다.

“習”자를 보면 날개 “우”(羽)자 밑에 흰 “백”(白)자가 있지요? 부리가 하얀 어린 참새가 바깥의 엄마 도움을 받아 막 나르려고 한다는 뜻입니다.

 

바로 “실천”이라는 의미이지요. 이 구절에서 “時”도 “자주” 혹은 “때때로”라는 의미라기보다는 적절한 시기, 여러 조건이 성숙한, 딱 맞는 때라고 해석하는 게 옳습니다.

이렇게 풀이 하면 “學而時習之 不亦悅乎”라는 구절은 우리가 흔히 아는 “배우고 때로 익히면 또한 즐겁지 아니한가”라는 풀이 보다“주관적 객관적 조건이 무르익었을 때 실천하는 게 어찌 즐겁지 않을 수 있겠는가” 라고 해석하는 게 맞습니다.
