A Victory for Mothers

 

On a hill by the Dnepr in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev stands a monument commemorating the pyrrhic victory against the Germans in the Second World War. I didn't recognize the monument right away for what it was, because it was merely a statue of a standing woman. I was expecting a war monument to have a different shape.

 

The guide noticed my confusion and gave me an explanation, which somewhat embarrassed me. What is a victory if not the sons' return home? No image could depict the essence of a victory in a way more touching than that of a mother waiting for her son, up on a hill to find him as early as possible. It was a deep awakening to me.

우크라이나의 수도 키예프의 드네프르 강 언덕에는 전승기념탑이 서 있습니다. 제2차 세계대전 때 수많은 희생을 치르면서 독일의 침략을 물리친 전승을 기념하는 탑입니다. 나는 그것이 전승기념탑인 줄도 몰랐습니다. 왜냐하면 언덕에 서 있는 여인상女人像이었기 때문입니다. 내가 생각하는 전승기념탑과는 너무도 다른 모양이었기 때문이지요.

의아해하는 나에게 들려준 안내자의 설명은 참으로 나를 부끄럽게 만들었습니다. 전승이란 전쟁에 나간 아들이 집으로 돌아오는 것을 의미하는 것이며 집으로 돌아오는 아들이 가장 잘 보이는 언덕에 어머니가 서서 기다리는 것, 그것만큼 전승의 의미를 감동적으로 나타내는 것이 있겠느냐는 것이었습니다. 충격이었습니다.
