(All prisoners used to hate the summer less than the winter because heating in prisons was notoriously inadequate. Yet Shenzi said he preferred the winter, and explains why.)

It is very hard to get to sleep in the summer heat with the pressure of your neighbor's body on you. You cannot help hating his presence. And your presence is hated by him exactly for the same reason. It is a despairing thing that human beings should hate one another for what they are, not for what they do.

(...)

I find things not so different on the other side of the prison walls. People are in an endless competition for space, not only on buses and tram cars, but also for education, for dwelling, and for parking cars. Their lives are full of confrontations, hatred, and struggles. One difference is the fact that on the outside, the targets and reasons for the hatred keep shifting all the time, while in prison, hatred is poured on the same targets for unchanging reasons. That is why the structure of the confrontations is not so easily perceived in the outside world.
