Mount Fuji and Asakusa

 

The stark contrast between the images of Mount Fuji and Asakusa (淺草, short grass) confuses me. It is true that the Japanese benefit from high economic growth just in the way short grass nourishes itself from melted ice, and they are supported by the strong Yen currency on their travels abroad. But I still have difficulty in connecting the two images.

 

On the one hand, there is Japan’s capitalism aiming at departing from Asia and joining the West. This attitude is still keeping the Japanese people from recognizing the alternative nature of the new century. Yet on the other hand, the spirit of diligence and moderation lies deep in the Japanese way of life, carrying a humanism of timeless relevance.

 

Even more confusing is the Japanese intellectual landscape where the notion of modernity remains unquestioned, while its overall significance is becoming less and less convincing in today’s world. And the remorseless 'positivism' of the Japanese capital pursuing only policies for greater hegemony at every grade, without any consideration of fairness. Most confusing of all is the fact that we Koreans are faithfully following the path. 

 

 

후지산과 아사쿠사
정작 혼란스러운 것은 후지 산과 아사쿠사(淺草:키 작은 풀)라는 두 개의 이미지가 이루어내는 극과 극의 대립입니다. 물론 키 작은 풀들이 눈 녹은 물로 자라듯이 고도 성장의 혜택을 입고 있는 것도 사실이며 또 실제로 해외 여행에서는 강력한 엔화가 보장해주는 경제적 여유를 향유하고 있는 것도 사실이라고 할 수 있습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 내게는 이 두 개의 이미지를 연결하는 것이 참으로 어려운 일이 아닐 수 없었습니다.
일찍이 아시아를 탈출하여 서구를 지향하며 달려가는 일본 자본주의의 모습은, 우선 일본인 스스로도 그러한 모습으로부터 새로운 세기의 대안적 성격을 읽어내지 못하고 있는 것이 사실이며, 반면 일본인의 생활 깊숙이 자리잡고 있는 근검과 절제는 어느 시대에나 소중히 해야 할 인간적 내용을 담고 있기 때문입니다.
그러나 더욱 혼란스러운 것은 이미 그 의미가 총체적으로 회의되고 있는 근대성에 대한 일말의 반성도 없는 일본의 지성입니다. 그리고 공정한 사회에 대한 진지한 모색도 없이 오로지 단계적 패권 정책에 몰두하는 일본 자본의 비정한 ‘작위(作爲)’입니다. 그리고 더더욱 혼란스러운 것은 그 길을 쫓아가고 있는 우리들의 모습입니다.
