Hate, another way of loving

Impartiality or neutrality is usually held in high esteem. But the prison is a simple place, different from the complex political situations of ordinary societies. Taking a neutral stance here, siding neither with the good nor with the bad, cannot be taken for a real neutrality. It requires even more calculation than mere opportunism.

The urge of a villager to be liked by every single neighbor can be seen in a similar way. He is either too weak to face any antagonism, too promiscuous to be faithful to his friends, ​or too much of a sentimental idealist in an immature way. He will never experience the true love exchanged between solid positions and views. Love is sensible, not blind. It is sacrifice, which cannot be infinite.

  불편부당(不偏不黨)이나 중립을 흔히 높은 덕목으로 치기도 하지만, 바깥 사회와 같은 복잡한 정치적 장치 속에서가 아니라 지극히 단순화된 징역 모델에서는 좋은 사람과 나쁜 사람이 싸울 때의 '중립'이란 실은 중립이 아니라 기회주의보다 더욱 교묘한 편당(偏黨)임을 쉽게 알 수 있습니다.
  마찬가지로 '마을의 모든 사람들'로부터 호감을 얻으려는 심리적 충동도, 실은 반대편의 비판을 두려워하는 '심약함'이 아니면, 아무에게나 영합하려는 '화냥끼'가 아니면, 소년들이 갖는 한낱 '감상적 이상주의'에 불과한 것이라 해야 합니다. 이것은 입장과 정견이 분명한 실(實)한 사랑의 교감이 없습니다. 사랑은 분별이기 때문에 맹목적이지 않으며, 사랑은 희생이기 때문에 무한할 수도 없습니다.
